As part of our holiday colors, we offer Mkeka (pronounced kee-kah). We wanted to represent the celebration of Kwanzaa in our holiday celebration, but we didn’t know much about it. Our studies resulted in learning the 7 principles of Kwanzaa:
Umoja – Unity
Kujichaguila – Self-determination
Ujima – Collective work
Ujamaa – Cooperative economics
Nia – Purpose
Imani – Faith
Celebratory symbols of the 7 principals are placed on the mkeka or mat. The mat is the base for the other symbols and represents the historical and traditional foundation. “As the symbols stand on the mat, our present and future stand on our yesterdays” (www.history.com/topics/holidays/kwanzaa-history).
This colorway features, on a base of gold, Red to represent the struggles of the African ancestors and the blood they shed; Black to represent the color of the African race; and Green, that evokes the fertile lands of Africa and hope. We hope we have represented our basic understanding of Kwanzaa with respect. We think its pretty special. We hope that Mkeka inspires you to make something special.
